Understanding Stapler Circumcision

An Overview

Stapler circumcision employs disposable medical instruments to swiftly, safely, and effectively remove the foreskin (prepuce). These devices, increasingly favored in recent years, cut the foreskin and immediately seal the wound using small metal clips, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in the procedure.

History of Stapler Circumcision

Surgical staples, pioneered by Hungarian surgeon Hümer Hültl in the early 20th century, have evolved significantly and are now extensively employed in diverse surgeries such as bowel and vascular procedures. Stapler circumcision represents a contemporary adaptation, offering a dependable and efficient approach for foreskin removal.

Benefits of Stapler Circumcision

Studies have demonstrated that stapler circumcision offers several advantages over traditional methods:

Stapler Circumcision

Circumcision offers numerous benefits:

  1. Improved hygiene: Easier to maintain cleanliness, reducing bacteria and infection risks.
  2. Lower risk of STDs: Reduced environment for pathogens under the foreskin.
  3. Decreased UTI risk: More common in uncircumcised men.
  4. Prevents penile problems: Lessens chances of balanitis, phimosis, and paraphimosis.
  5. Lower risk of penile cancer: May decrease likelihood of developing cancer.
  6. Enhanced sexual satisfaction: Potential for prolonged ejaculation time.
  7. Reduced pain during sex: Less friction, fewer abrasions or tears.

Stapler Circumcision Procedure

Pre-Procedure Steps:

Measurement: The most suitable device size is determined for the patient.

Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia is applied, either via topical creams or injectable anaesthetics.

Preparation: The area is cleaned with antiseptic solutions.

Incision: An incision may be made at the foreskin (if required) to insert the inner bell.

Insertion: The inner bell is positioned over the glans penis and secured with a surgical tie.

Firing the Stapler: The inner and outer bells are aligned, the safety pin is removed, and the stapler is fired, held for 3 minutes to ensure a clean cut and haemostasis.

Wound Care: The wound is cleaned with antiseptic, covered with antibiotic cream, and bandaged with special compression bandages.

Discharge: The patient is sent home with painkillers and antibiotics.

Follow-Up after Procedure

Follow-Up: Patients return within 2-3 days for wound inspection. The bandage is removed, and the wound is examined for bleeding or infection. Patients are taught proper wound care. The staples typically detach after about 14 days. Sexual activity should be avoided for at least one month.

Possible Complications:

Infection: Arises from inadequate wound care.

Pain: Common during recovery, usually milder compared to traditional techniques.

Oedema: Fluid accumulation in nearby tissues, treated with dressings or medications.

Wound Dehiscence: Potential incomplete closure of wound edges, possibly requiring sutures.

Bleeding: Varies from minor oozing to heavier flow, typically resolves with minimal intervention.

Residual Staples: Some staples may require removal by a doctor.
